From a teacher in Lafayette, CA: "AFTER DEBORAH'S TALK, WE BRAIN-STORMED HOW 3D PRINTERS COULD BE USED TO CREATE PROSTHETICS FOR DIFFERENT ANIMALS TO HELP WITH SURVIVAL AFTER BIRTH DEFECTS, INJURY, ETC. THE KIDS WORKED IN GROUPS TO DESIGN AN ANIMAL PROSTHETIC ON PAPER AND DETERMINED WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE, HOW IT WOULD WORK AND HOW IT WOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE ANIMAL. THEN THEY USED TINKERCAD TO DESIGN THE PROSTHETIC ON A PLANE SO THEY COULD TWEAK THEIR DESIGN ALONG THE WAY, AND FINALLY THEY PRINTED! I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE COMPLEXITY OF THEIR DESIGNS."

The kids were completely enthralled.”

”Deborah had a fantastic visit. Her enthusiasm was infectious. Passing around actual 3D printed versions of Beauty’s beak to show along with the story helped students understand the technology innovations involved with helping Beauty survive. Students were captivated by the subject and story and given that our students have been exposed to, and participated in, 3D printing, they were ecstatic to learn the wonderful applications of this modern day technology.

IN-PERSON AND SKYPE VISITS FOR ALL AGES

My presentations are fun, content-rich, interactive—everyone gets to ask lots of questions—and highly engaging for both children and adults. I bring 3D-printed, life-size replicas of Beauty's prosthetic beak that  everyone gets to touch and examine. I tailor every presentation to your school, grade/s or organization. My honorarium is based on audience size, presentation length and mode of presentation. Book purchases and discounts can be arranged. E-mail me via the contact form and let me know what kind of program you would like!

My books cover many topics, nonfiction and fiction. I can speak about:
BEAUTY AND THE BEAK, about the bald eagle who received a 3D-printed prosthetic beak, and my other animal books like JIMMY THE JOEY about a baby koala's rescue, and INTO THE A, B, SEA: AN OCEAN ALPHABET
—STEM, 3D printing, and the connection between science, technology, engineering and literacy (including NGSS)
—Environmental conservation/bald eagles/koalas/ocean science/wildlife rescue/animal adaptations
—From brainstorm to book:
ideas/research/strong words/rhyme and rhythm/collaboration/the work of a writer/perspective
—My funny school stories like THE FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN and THE SPELLING BEE BEFORE RECESS
CHARLOTTE'S WEB and the power of words

I have presented about BEAUTY AND THE BEAK at the National Science Teachers Association, New England Library Association, California School Library Association, and Mt. Diablo Audubon Chapter
