Astronauts Zoom!

THis BOOK WAS LAUNCHed ON MARCH 2, 2023 (READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY) and rocketed ON THE Dragon ENDEAVOUR SPACECRAFT WITH 4 ASTRONAUTS TO THE ISS 250 MILES ABOVE EARTH. ON THE SPACE STATION, while ORBITING AT 17,500 MPH, astronaut Koichi Wakata (of the japanese aerospace exploration agency, jaxa) READ THE BOOK ALOUD FOR A STEM/READING RESOURCE THAT CAN BE VIEWED ANYWHERE in the world.

THE BOOK HAS RETURNED TO EARTH AFTER ABOUT 120 DAYS IN FLIGHT AND and 57 million miles TRAVELED! READ ABOUT ITS JOURNEY, AND GET IDEAS FOR FUN KID ACTIVITIES, IN DEBORAH’S NEW ARTICLE IN CHILDREN AND LIBRARIES JOURNAL

DEBARY AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CHILDREN’S SCIENCE BOOKS FOR THE YOUNGEST CHILDREN, from the American Phytopathological Society/California Department of Education 2022 recommended reading list

How do astronauts live and work ON THE SPACE STATION? Where do they sleep? What do they wear? How do they float? What do they see out the CUPOLA windows? DO THEY HAVE ANY FUn? DO THEY MISS EARTH?

ASTRONAUT TOOLS TREASURE HUNT—FIND 25 TOOLS IN ASTRONAUTS ZOOM!

Outside the ISS, astronauts use specialized tools while spacewalking including the giant Canadarm2. This robotic arm moves astronauts and equipment from one part of the ISS to another. Astronauts cannot spacewalk without spacesuits, helmets and gloves, plus tethers to keep them attached to the station. They also wear jetpacks that can power them back to the ISS in case they ever got disconnected. Astronauts use special power drills to repair, replace and install parts. They wear helmet lights to work in darkness, or pull down gold helmet visors to protect their faces and eyes from solar rays. Tubes in the clothing under their spacesuits circulate water to keep their entire bodies cool in full sun. Cameras on their helmets record what they do, and let Mission Control see what astronauts are seeing closeup.
Inside the ISS, astronauts wear watches to stay on a tight schedule, and smart wristbands to collect data on how life in space affects the human body. They use computers to record and analyze data, and communicate with Earth. They use vacuum cleaners to collect dust and tiny particles, so these won’t clog their equipment. Astronauts use microscopes to zoom in on tiny cells from many different biological experiments. They use cameras to zoom out and take photos and videos of huge natural phenomena, like hurricanes and volcanic eruptions. Astronauts can look down at Earth or out into space through the ISS cupola, the station’s dome shaped windows.

Kirkus Reviews

"A high-spirited picture of daily life in low-Earth orbit...A fizzy mix of space fun and science.”—

School Library Journal

This picture book offers a wonderful opportunity for the youngest readers to develop verbal language…a strong introduction to space travel…a mentor text for young writers to create their own ABC book.”

Common Sense Media

”…plenty of details about everyday life that are so much more exciting because they're happening in space. Washing hair and making pizza are the kind of activities that kids can relate to, and many have dreamed about what it would be like to look at Earth from far away...”

engagetheirminds.com

“ …children of any gender and race can see someone reflective of them representing this incredible career.”—

Astronaut Jay Apt, Space Shuttle STS-37, 47, 59, 79

”A delightful book with great photographs showing how we live in Earth orbit to inspire the next generation of space explorers and workers. Parents will enjoy the book as much as their children will!”

Lori Oczkus, (national literacy expert)

“Inspires kids to learn NEW information about what real astronauts do!”
